Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition of multiple lumbar facet joints: a case report.

Pseudogout of the lumbar facet joints is rare. We report on a 69-year-old woman with 2-level symptomatic synovial cysts of the facet joints caused by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition. She underwent surgical decompression for sciatica and low back pain. At one-year follow-up, she had recovered completely.

A case of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease presenting as an acute polyarthritis.

We report a case of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPDD) presenting as an acute polyarthritis. A 66-yr-old woman was admitted with a 5-day history of fever and multiple joint pain including wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, and ankles developed 5 days before admission. Her plain radiographs of wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, and ankles showed chondrocalcinosis. Th...

Triple crystal disease: monosodium urate monohydrate, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate, and basic calcium phosphate in a single joint.

A 49 year old man is described with a polyarticular arthritis. Synovial fluid aspirated from the knee joint showed monosodium urate monohydrate and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate by polarised light microscopy. Additionally, diphosphonate binding and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis showed that basic calcium phosphate crystals were also present. This appears to be th...

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease: clinical manifestations.

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is an arthropathy caused by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPP) crystal deposits in articular tissues, most commonly fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage. According to EULAR, four different clinical presentations can be observed: 1) asymptomatic CPPD; 2) osteoarthritis (OA) with CPPD; 3) acute CPP crystal arthritis; 4) chronic CPP inflammatory c...

Pyrophosphate arthropathy--recent clinical advances.

It is now 20 years since McCarty et al. identified calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals in synovial fluid from patients with acute arthritis and radiological chondrocalcinosis.' CPPD crystals were subsequently shown to be inflammatory both in vivo and in vitro2 and their causal role in joint disease, reflected by the term 'CPPD crystal-induced synovitis', was readily accepted. Cadave...
